It is often observed in the western countries like USA and UK that cigarettes are the reason for more deaths than car related accidents, alcohol, homicide, AIDS and substance abuse combined. These staggering facts about cigarettes suggest that how harmful smoking can become in the long run.

Cigarettes contain more than 4,000 harmful chemicals including nicotine, tar and tobacco. The throat, mouth and the lungs are the most affected due to cigarette smoking. Prolonged smoking of cigarettes can lead to any of the cancers of the mouth, throat and the lungs. It is a fact 30% of all cancer deaths take place due to cigarette smoking. Cigarette smoking can also lead to cancer of the other parts of the body like bladder, liver, stomach, kidney, colon and rectum. Also 87% of all lung cancers are caused due to cigarette smoking. Cigarette smoking can be more harmful to women than men. Cigarette smoking can lead to sexual problems in women as well as reproductive problems. Cigarette smoking is one of the major factors for miscarriage in women. Smoking also contributes to heart disease, heart strokes and bronchitis.

Each cigarette that you smoke can take 10-12 minutes from your life time. Hence an average smoker may lose about 13 years of his normal lifetime. Female smokers may lose about 14 years of their lives if they smoke regularly for a long period. Coming back to ingredients in a cigarette, apart from the 4,000 chemicals, there are 43 compounds that are carcinogens. Compounds like carbon monoxide and ammonia are also found in the cigarette. Cigar and pipe smoking are also s dangerous as cigarette smoking. In fact cigar smoking can turn out to be more dangerous as the amount of smoke that goes in the lungs is doubled due to the thickness of the cigars. Manufacturers are smart as they never mention all the compounds as well as the exact amounts of the compounds included in the cigarettes. Cigarettes are extremely addictive and once you get hooked to the habit, it is very difficult to kick the habit.
